Sounds crazy right? But yes, you can make a DIY L-shaped desk!

Why use an L shaped desk

Let’s expound on how getting an L- shaped desk can benefit you.

Separate workstations

It’s easy to create two separate workstations. We love how L-shaped desks can make your working space clutter-free. You can allocate one area where you can put all your papers and supplies so it doesn’t get in the way of your keyboard. And a clutter-free working station will always make you more productive. Not to mention, it’s not going to be an eyesore. You might even have a cute corner where you can put some cacti and succulents to amp up the mood.

While you can also do the same with two perpendicular desks, you have to configure it on your own. So it can be additional work for you.

More working area for less space

One amazing advantage of L-shaped desks is that they can give you more working space without eating too much space. Because it can be flushed against the corner, you can make use of the dead space in the room and create it into a functional one. This is perhaps the main reason why a lot of people are shifting to L-shaped desks.

Maximize desk area

L-shaped desks may allow you to create a more useful workstation. It is easy to change stations or after the design of your workstation. Much can be done with an L-shaped desk. A traditional straight desk, on the other hand, will not offer you this advantage. But keep in mind that we are speaking of a single straight desk here. Combining two desks is another thing, and we will expound on that later.

Two Desks Perpendicular is better?

L-shaped desks & some of the disadvantages

There can be unusable dead space

This can be a pro or a con, depending on how you set up your workstation. If you will not be able to make a proper layout, you can end up having a dead space at the corner. But the good news is, you can place your PC or printer in that dead space. You just have to know how to properly arrange your desk in the most efficient manner.

More challenging to put together

Because L-shaped desks are composed of one big bulky tabletop, it can be more challenging and more time-consuming to put them together. Normally, you will be needing help in setting it up compared to a traditional straight desk. It’s not always a one-man job.

Challenging to move

And since the desk is heavy and bigger, it will be challenging to move it from one room to another. And if you are moving offices, you have to disassemble the desk so that it will fit in the doorway.

Should you do DIY or buy an L-shaped desk?

Now we go to the main concern of this article.

Let’s hover through the pros of using two desks that are connected perpendicularly.

Getting two separate tables and arranging them perpendicularly will address the cons that we have mentioned above.

it will be easier to move the desks from one room to another. Since these are two separate entities, they can fit into the doorway without needing to disassemble it. Also, it will be lighter too.

In addition, you will be able to set the desk up yourself. It’s like setting up two straight desks, you just have to add a bit more time. But compared to an L-shaped desk, the setup will be easier. It will also be easier to carry it along with a flight of stairs compared to an L- shaped desk.

And this is perhaps the biggest advantage of doing a DIY You have more freedom and flexibility on how you will arrange the desk. And you also have more control over where you are going to place the dead space. You can connect the second table either to the left side or the right side of the first desk. And if you are moving places, this option is easier. You do not have to worry if it will fit into your new home office since you can configure it.

And here are the disadvantages

Since these are two separate tables, you have to adjust them individually. If you do not normally go from sitting to standing position and vice versa, you will likely not find this an issue. But if you transition the desk several times in a day, it can be tiring to adjust two separate desks.

Also, there is a concern if the frames and legs of the desk will come in the way of your feet. It can eat up floor space at the center. This can be a concern if you have long legs and you’re using the desk in a seated position. You will not be able to sit where the two desks meet because the frames will come in the way.

We also find that there could be a bit of an eyesore if you use two separate tables. There will be a clear demarcation line on the area where the two desks were connected. And unless you plan on screwing these two ends to each other, it can also pose wobbling issues. And you have to be careful to not put anything on that demarcation line because it can fall once you move the two desks.

L-Shaped Standing Desk or Two Desks Perpendicular is better?

The best choice will have to spend on your circumstances. In normal circumstances, we favor getting L-shaped desks over doing DIY. L-shaped desks are more stable and you will likely not experience any wobbles compared to connecting two straight desks perpendicularly.

And we really didn’t like the frames coming in the way of our legs and feet. So it somehow disrupts a smooth workflow. And if you’re OCDC, you will find the line where the two desks meet to be a little disruptive.

Also, you will be able to use the dead space in the corner with an L-shaped desk. And as mentioned earlier, you might not be able to do that with two separate desks. That’s unless you screw the connecting ends of the table to one another or use the desk stationary.

But there are instances wherein a DIY may be suitable for you.

  • You tend to move places. Thus, DIY will be a more efficient option for you. You do not have to work out lugging a big deck down the flight of stairs. And you might not need to disassemble the desk to move it.

Also, it will not matter how the room is configured since you have more flexibility in arranging the tables. You don’t have to worry about the shape of the room since you will fit the desk into the room and not the other way around.

  • If you will make the desk stationary, meaning you will not change the desk height, then a DIY might be suitable for you. Can you just imagine how cumbersome it could be if you have to adjust two separate desks all the time?
  • If there isn’t a dedicated corner where you can place the L-shaped desk, then a DIY will be easier. Sometimes, it might be difficult to find a way to position an L shaped in a small space. So it will be advisable for very small offices and rooms to go DIY instead.
  • A DIY will be very useful in office settings where there is a need to change the workflow every now and then. You have the option to configure the two desks according to your needs. And when the need arises, you can put the strength desks parallel to one another. Or maybe arrange them up in rows or face them against the wall. This can be a usual scenario in a very interactive office where you tend to brainstorm with other team members and the like.

But keep in mind that two separate desks will be more expensive than buying an L-shaped desk.

Conclusion

Whether you choose to buy an L-shaped desk or have two separate desks perpendicular to one another depends on how you work. We also find that if you work with other people, say in a usual office setting, a DIY may be more suitable. It’s because there might be a need to arrange desks or make larger desks for one person and the like. DIYs are also becoming more popular because people crave flexibility now that most of us are already working from home.Â
