We did have to stop for a moment to figure out the various range of motion options, but it was smooth sailing from this point onwards.

Keen intern insights – Backed by seasoned benchmark testers this time, our intern observed tilt range. It varied between +90° and -15° of tilt. Likewise, the height range had a maximum and minimum, which locked in at a 10.6” top and bottom limit. As for swivel and rotation, on-the-move office types can expect a 240° twist range and a full 360° rotation. One deskbound user can enter data, then swivel and rotate the screen so that someone on the opposite side of the desk can view the screen output, too.

The solid die cast metals in this rig felt, well, solid. No droop or shake accompanied movement from a nearby rambling presence, so no boss on the prowl could shake its gas stabilized hold over any of the three screens, each of which could be sized up to a 24” screen span. There was also a tensioning screw again. Just as before, clockwise twists to the screw should be used for lighter monitors, then turned counterclockwise if the monitor is a heavier model. Maximum monitor weight, as observed on the specs page, is 14.8 lbs, which is more than enough for most 24” screens.

More Budget options

WALI Gas Spring Monitor Arm

Intermission time, we’re switching interns. Our young annex worker has been pulled by a senior staff member. Just as well, we have a Dell 34” gaming monitor to play with during office hours. It’s their model S3422DWG curved monitor, fitted with a VESA 100x100mm rear mount interface. The WALI Gas Spring Monitor Arm, using either VESA 75x75mm or 100x100mm mounting, is a heavy duty 45° tilt and 90° swivel workhorse, built to carry 35” screens, so it seemed like a match made in heaven.

The gaming enthusiast intern was partnered with a senior review staffer, and the work began. Installation was easy enough, the all-metal segments utilizing either a grommet base mount or a C-Clamp anchoring point. The grommet mechanism was eventually picked, but it was nice to know the C-Clamp was there if we wanted to attach the arm monitor to a thicker desk surface. Then, although our gamer was quickly becoming preoccupied with monitor settings, our reviewer turned his attention to the gas spring arm. It really did smoothen the manipulation of heavy screens, making the process feel satisfyingly like moving a much lighter load.

Keen intern insights – A bump on the narrow workstation caused an under-the-breath curse and a sore knee, yet the monitor barely wobbled on its WALI gas spring arm. We took note of that feature while limping over to the cushioned office seat behind the desk. By the way, curving across the desk with its 34” width, the Dell monitor came in at an underweight 17 lbs. The heavy duty arm segments and quick detach VESA plate can support almost twice that weight.

The only other advice we’d offer at this point is to use a two man team when assembling the gear. Someone will install the monitor arm, then the recruited second person will hold the monitor while the mounting stage takes place. Afterwards, a weighty monitor might interfere with a tilt operation, but there’s an adjustable hex nut that can be locked down when a specific degree of tilt is required by the computer user. Settings like this are vital when establishing a comfortable posture over the course of a long workday.

Amazon Basics Premium Single Monitor Stand

This single-arm mount works with almost any monitor measuring 81.2 cm or even those that measure a bit smaller. These can be connected to your desk via C clamps. So ensure that your desk is thick enough to be able to bear the two C clamp installations. You must have a more hefty desk for this setup.

It also works for the heavier monitor. You just need to tighten the screws to have a better and more snug hold.

Looking at the specs, the arms hold 35” screens, each of which can weigh up to 26.4 lbs. It doesn’t feel like any shortcuts have been taken in the design. On the contrary, this is a heavy-duty dual screen setup with utilitarian looks. Still, for a budget product, it punches well above its weight class.

VESA compliant, to 75x75mm and 100x100mm again, the rigid segments on the Huanuo HNDS12 extend forward and up. It’ll push monitors forward for a 21.6” closer look or up to a 20.5” height, which is perfect for those of us with age-related vision problems. Likewise, the 45° to 85° tilt is good for eliminating annoying office reflections. Two gas springs control all of this finite adjustability, but they sometimes don’t feel quite as smooth as more premium monitor arms, at least that was our reviewer’s impression.

Keen intern insights – The workaday looks of the Huanuo kit aren’t as attractive as some of the products on this list. No matter, it’s a heavy-duty piece of gear with two gas spring arms and a huge span of screen real estate coverage, meaning it’s a good fit for video production teams and creatives. The clamp and grommet base desk fittings are included, and assembly was easy enough, using a hex wrench again, but that clamp did feel a little intrusive. As long as you don’t need to crawl under the desk, though, you’ll be fine.

A little wobble is experienced when the full 21” stretch is used. We pulled the display forward, and it settled quickly, stabilizing in place for all day coding or video editing. Just as an experiment, we mounted the second monitor vertically, hex wrench at hand. Large code datasets and spreadsheets were superbly framed in this orientation, with a slight tug tilting the screen away from a noon day window’s overly bright illuminance.

Dual vs Single Mount Showdown

It may also be based on your preference. But here are the differences between using a dual monitor mount from a 2 single monitor arm setup.

1. Space requirement

If you don’t have a generous desk space, a dual monitor arm will work better. Since you only need to clamp on one pole and stand for the setup, it will have a lesser footprint. 

If you are using single arms, on the other hand, you have to allot more free space on the desk since you will be mounting 2 units. If you have a wider desk, this will not be an issue. But problems arise if your working area is already full of equipment and gadgets. Then you have only minimal space that you can allow for the arms

2. Installation

The 2 single arms present more hassle. One, you have to install each one. So that will be twice the labor. It will be less a hassle if you have a dal mount instead since you only need to install one unit. 

 If you are going to install the arms via a grommet mount, you have to drill a hole for each unit. This will add up to your labor time where you could have been doing something else, right? And if you have a shallow desk, you will not be able to install the arm via C clamps. Unless you have a hefty and stronger table that can take on twice the pressure. 

The same thing goes if you are going to mount the arms on the wall. You have to drill 2 holes to attach the connecting parts. And extra labor can mean extra hours.

3. Configuration

Dual monitor arms will be easier to configure. It will be easier to reposition or change the tilt and angle of the monitors. Since it’s one single unit, the two monitors are already held in 2 arms and connected to a single base. So you are also sure that they will not bang against one another since they are already configured on a single base.

While with the 2 single-arm setups, you have to do some prep work. You have to measure the suitable distance between two units. Otherwise, the two monitors night bang against one another once you try repositioning them. So you’ll end up dismantling the setup and reinstalling them again. 

You must also be sure of what brand or model to buy. Are you going to use two identical arms? Or do you want to use different monitor arm models for a more creative working area?  

Whichever is your option, you have to be well versed in what angle the arms can tilt. If you pull them towards or away from you, will they not bang against one another? How about repeating the monitors on separate stands, how will you go about it?

4. Determine the table strength 

For the 2 single-arm setups, there will be a double flex in it. So you have to make sure that your desk is strong enough to handle the additional flex. When is a 2 single monitor arm setup beneficial?

So from what we have discussed above, the dual monitor arm seems to be the better option for mounting multiple monitors. But of course, there’s always an exception to the rule.

So when is a 2 single-arm setup better? These situations or circumstances may warrant it to be a better option.

1. Like what we have mentioned in number 5 above, if you need your monitors to be significantly apart, then it’s better to install 2 single arms. Since you have the liberty and option to place the individual units at any distance from one another, it’s the most suitable option.
